Ignoring The Big Hint
July 1990
Even when I happened to hear on
a 30 second radio news report while in a shop in Grants Pass, Oregon, that
50,000 Iraqi troops were massed on the northern border of Kuwait, I never
seriously considered that my life in Kuwait was over and that my home and
all my possessions would be lost, friends dispersed, and income abruptly
cut off. I was safely outside the country, on summer vacation in the States,
when the invasion took place, but I lived the occupation, war and liberation
as authentically as anyone could from half a world away thanks to CNN, the
network news, and the telephone, and spent much of the next 6 months hunched
over in front of the 6" b/w TV set my sister lent me, squinting at the news.
